LISTENING TO OUR PEEPS
After a winter of serious fruitcake eating, Vermonters anticipate the first tastes of spring: fiddleheads, tart rhubarb and wild greens are among the flavors that announce the fresh new season. But it is the first sounds of spring that draw us into the natural world around us pulsing with life. When the sun goes down we hike into the woods to visit vernal pools, where a symphony rewards those willing to make the nighttime trek. First up are the wood frogs (Rana sylvatica), quacking in the shallow waters, complemented by the high pitched chorus of tiny peepers (Pseudacris crucifer), and the slow trilling of tree frogs. It is the bell-like song of the peepers that most locals associate with the the true arrival of spring. Their mating call sends a hopeful message through the cool night as they sing for their lives. If we thought they were singing for their supper we would offer them some of our succulent fruitcake. To hear peepers without trekking into the woods visit http://ed.fnal.gov/projects/frogs/springpeeperinfo.html.

Those of us who live in the forested hills on the back roads of Vermont learn quickly that losing power is part of life here, whether it’s from downed power lines in an ice storm or the fury of Tropical Storm Irene. When the lights go out we either fire up the generators or make do with candlelight and kerosene lamps. And we keep those refrigerator and freezer doors shut tight! One food that is impervious to power outages is Old Cavendish Fruitcake. While our moist, nutty fruitcakes love being stored in the back of the frig, they stay fresh and delicious on the kitchen counter as the perfect emergency ration. And voila, dessert by candlelight!

What do Vermont Turkeys and Cavendish Fruitcake have in common? Besides being delicious? We’ve all heard about local food and slow food and good food as qualifiers for appealing meals. We took that literally and bought our turkey, hand raised by our friend Joe MacDonald in Mt. Holly, Vermont. He let his birds grow a wee bit longer than last year so we got a Huge and Hugely Delicious Bird. It was moist and full of flavor that only a healthy bird can provide. Our fruitcakes also take a long time to develop flavor as they soak up the brandy and we use only unsulphured fruits and nuts and of course, Vermont Honey to sweeten. Hand made just for you to grace your table and please your guests. Remember: Fruitcake; you don’t have to be one to eat one.

“I just received my gluten-free fruitcake and it is WONDERFUL!!!!

I found out two years ago I had Celiac. I truly missed Old Cavendish Fruitcakes and I was so happy to see you make a gluten-free Fruitcake. I can’t even tell I’m eating gluten-free and that is more of a compliment than you know, if you haven’t tried gluten-free baked goods.

Thank you so much. You made my day, week, month, definitely the holiday season. You”ll be receiving more orders from me in the future.”

Cavendish is known as the home of Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the Cavendish Gorge, and the most famous skull in neurology (Phineas Gage) But Cavendish Canyon? When Tropical Storm Irene raged through Vermont on August 28, Cavendish lost the eastern end of scenic Route 131 that winds along the beautiful Black River. Always a favorite route for bikers, leaf peepers and fly fishing fanatics, that section along the river was transformed into a ragged crater 500 feet long, 60 feet deep and 125 feet wide, filled with raging floodwaters. It quickly became the center of a huge Nation Guard effort to repair the hole that destroyed a main traffic corridor. We donated MonkeyChew Granola Bars to the town office as our way to say thank you to them for the help Cavendish received in restoring services to town residents. According to Town Clerk Diane MacNamara, the many National Guradsmen, FEMA officials and local big-equipment operators who stopped by the town office for consultation chose the mOnkeyCHew Bar as their sustianing snack. The Cavendish Canyon will require 1.2 million cubic yard of fill in order to restore Route 131 as a scenic higheway, and there is still much work to be done. But the thousands of hours put in by the massive military effort and local contractors who logged in 100-hour work weeks told us that we were not alone in Irene’s aftermath. And we suspected that keeping all those workers fueled by MonkeyChew Granola Bars was one way to assure that the heavy equipement necessary to get the job done would be kept running at full tilt!
